Dr. John Carr joins UNA Math Department

Dr. Carr graduated with his PhD from Auburn University in 2022 and is new faculty member of the Department of Mathematics at UNA. His research interests lie in combinatorics, graph theory, and nonassociative algebra, with a specialization in design theory and trades. Dr. John Carr graduated from UNA in 2016 with his BS, and is excited to return to the university that helped launch his career in mathematics!

UNA Student First to Graduate from Dual Degree Engineering Program with 快猫短视频 2018

It just so happens that 快猫短视频 alumnus Taylor Myrick is also a University of 快猫短视频 alumnus.  And while that may sound pretty common, Myrick’s path to the dual degree was a first for UNA.

Myrick is the first UNA student to complete the Dual Degree Engineering Program (DDEP), which is a 3+2 plan that offers students the opportunity to earn two bachelor’s degrees in five years from UNA and the University of 快猫短视频.  The program is designed to allow students to attend three years at UNA and two years at UA.

Myrick chose to major in physics at UNA; he then went on to earn a degree in electrical engineering from UA, but that wasn’t always the plan....

UNA Math Faculty at Joint Mathematics Meetings 2017

Seven UNA math faculty joined over 6000 mathematicians in Atlanta for the joint meetings of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America, JMM2017.

Jay Jackson presented his research on student categorization of algebra problems, Dr. Miranda Bowie presented her work with Drs. Sewell and Sinko on set-sized packing on graphs, and Dr. Cindy Stenger and Dr. James Jerkins (CSIS) presented results from a study using computer programming to improve mathematical thinking.

UNA Math Department participates in UNA First Friday

Math department professors Dr. Prince-Lubawy and Dr. Johnson put together activities on Knot Theory to interest and entertain the public on Friday evening, November 4 at the UNA Themed First Friday. The handouts and solutions used can be found here.

In addition, UNA faculty Dr. Miranda Bowie, Dr. Ashley Johnson, Dr. James Jerkins, Dr. Cindy Stenger, and Dr. Jessica Stovall gave pedagogical talks at the conference. Undergraduate Audrey McGee and Math Professors, Dr. Jillian Stupiansky and Dr. Lee Raney also attended the conference.

Dr. Stovall with Math faculty

Dr. Stovall Recognized by Athletics Department

The 快猫短视频 Athletics Department recognized Dr. Jessica Stovall during the 3rd quarter of the UNA-Langston football game for outstanding faculty achievement.

"Dr. Jessica Stovall's research in Functional Analysis with an emphasis in Operator Theory has taken her across the country and the world, from an invited presentation at the University of Arkansas to an international conference at Leiden University in the Netherlands.

Dr. Stovall's math/CS education research works to increase STEM readiness among high schoolers through collaborative work with regional teachers using computer programming to teach mathematical thinking skills.

And, her work with UNA's Math/CS Undergraduate research team has landed her in the Nation's Capitol, presenting at Poster's on the Hill in Washington, DC."

Project NExT

“ (New Experiences in Teaching) is a professional development program for new or recent Ph.D.s in the mathematical sciences. It addresses all aspects of an academic career: improving the teaching and learning of mathematics, engaging in research and scholarship, and participating in professional activities. It also provides the participants with a network of peers and mentors as they assume these responsibilities.”

The UNA Math Department is proud to recognize our Project NExT Fellows:

  • Dr. Ashley Johnson, 2013-2014
  • Dr. Jill Stupiansky, 2013-2014
  • Dr. Lee Raney, 2014-2015
